Sometimes, you take a picture and think, woa! Awesome! And then you get it into photoshop and think...omg, what it THAT?! As you can see in the picture above, the Naiad's arm is obviously going straight through her breast. That's not normal. I know what you're thinking...go back in a do it again. But, with Photoshop's tools, you can fix this problem quickly and with relative ease. There are two different tools you use to fix problems, but in
this tutorial i'm going to be using the Clone Stamp Tool.
The Clone Stamp Tool is actually fairly straightforeward. First, select the tool from the tools palette- it will look like an old-fashioned Rubber Stamp. I've circled it in the picture.
Next, zoom in on the spot that needs editing. Resize the brush so it is a size that is most useful- i've made mine at about 17 pixels.
For this next step, you need to use a bit of imagination. What should the area that's broken really look like? You need to find an area of the image that looks similar to it. You need to match color and shading so that the fixed area looks right. When you've found the perfect spot, hold down the alt key (on a pc) and click on the spot you want to clone from.
The actual repairing is tricky. You have to use the stamp tool just right so that the cloning isn't obvious. This means that you will have to click multiple times and gently blend the shape into existance. It's really hard to illustrate it in still images, but once you start you'll soon understand what's going on.When you've finished cloning, you may have to use the smudge tool to smooth out some edjes.
Finally, you can zoom out and see the fruits of your labour. In my example, the Naiad actually has an arm now! You can use the Clone Stamp Tool to fix many different problems, and is the more heavy-duty (and easier to controll) of the two image fixing tools in Photoshop, and can be powerfull and useful.
ps. does the new post format make it easier for you to follow my tutorials? please tell me in the comments!
